A lakefront city with room to grow

Leesburg’s 2020 census population was around 27,000, and it’s grown fast since, with a 2025 estimate near 39,000, a pace that outstrips most of the smaller towns in our footprint. Known as “The Lakefront City,” Leesburg was first settled in 1857 and today hosts Lake-Sumter State College and Beacon College. Its growth has taken on new momentum from The Villages’ own expansion pressure: in spring 2017, the holding company behind The Villages moved to acquire roughly 2,600 acres near Leesburg, with plans for approximately 4,500 homes and commercial development.

That combination, a long-established lakefront core plus rapid newer growth pushed by Villages-adjacent development, produces two distinct kinds of irrigation calls here.

Established lakefront neighborhoods with older systems. Leesburg’s original residential core, closer to Lake Harris and Lake Griffin, tends to carry older irrigation systems that have had years to accumulate the ordinary wear covered on our sprinkler repair and head replacement pages: cracked risers, worn valves, controllers on their original backup batteries.

Newer construction tied to Villages-area growth.
